How to Pray Witr Step by Step

The Witr prayer is one of the most emphasized optional (Sunnah Muakkadah/Wajib) prayers in Islam. The word "Witr" translates to "odd," reflecting the requirement that this prayer must consist of an odd number of Rakat (usually 1, 3, or 5).

It acts as the final seal to your nighttime worship. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Make Witr the last of your prayer at night." (Sahih Al-Bukhari).

Quick Summary: The most common way to pray Witr is to pray 3 Rakat. You pray two Rakat, sit for Tashahhud, stand up for the third Rakat, recite Fatiha and a Surah, say Allahu Akbar to raise your hands, recite the Dua Qunut, and then bow for Ruku.

When Do You Pray Witr?

The time for Witr begins immediately after the obligatory Isha prayer and lasts until the beginning of Fajr (true dawn). You can check exact Isha and Fajr times here.

If you plan to wake up in the last third of the night to pray Tahajjud, it is best to delay your Witr until after Tahajjud. However, if you are unsure whether you will wake up, you should pray Witr immediately after Isha before going to sleep.

The 3 Rakat Format (Hanafi Method)

There are a few valid ways to pray Witr based on different schools of thought, but the 3-Rakat method with one continuous prayer is the most widespread in many parts of the world. Here is the step-by-step breakdown:

  1. First Rakat: Recite Surah Al-Fatiha followed by another Surah (Surah Al-A'la is Sunnah). Bow for Ruku and prostrate for Sujood as normal.
  2. Second Rakat: Recite Surah Al-Fatiha followed by a Surah (Surah Al-Kafirun is Sunnah). Complete your Ruku and Sujood, then sit for the Tashahhud (Attahiyyat).
  3. Stand for the Third Rakat: Do NOT say the final Salam. Stand up for the third Rakat.
  4. Recitation: Recite Surah Al-Fatiha followed by a Surah (Surah Al-Ikhlas is Sunnah).
  5. The Takbeer: After finishing the Surah, say "Allahu Akbar" and raise your hands to your ears (as you do when starting the prayer), then fold them back over your chest.
  6. Dua Qunut: Recite the Dua of Qunut silently. (See below).
  7. Finish the Prayer: Say Allahu Akbar, bow down into Ruku, complete your Sujood, sit for the final Tashahhud, send blessings upon the Prophet (Darood), and end with Salam to the right and left.

What is Dua Qunut?

The Dua Qunut is a special supplication recited in the final Rakat of Witr. The most common formulation begins with:

"Allahumma inna nasta'inuka wa nastaghfiruka wa nu'minu bika..."

(O Allah! We seek Your help and ask for Your forgiveness, and we believe in You...)

If you have not yet memorized the Dua Qunut, it is permissible to recite "Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil 'akhirati hasanatan waqina 'adhaban-nar" (Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire) or simply say "Ya Rabbi" three times until you learn it.

The 2+1 Rakat Format (Shafi/Hanbali Method)

Another highly recommended and authentic way to pray Witr is to break it into two parts:
